If you only have 1 to 3 days in Rome, pick a neighborhood that’s close to a metro stop.
Why? Buses in Rome can be pretty unreliable: either out of service or very unpunctual. Plus, traffic in Rome is pretty bad, so it can take ages to get from point A to point B. If you just have 1-3 days here, you won’t want to waste time in traffic (or waiting for a delayed bus).
For each neighborhood in this guide, I’ve provided info on how close it is to the nearest metro stop. Note that not all areas of Rome are well-connected by the metro. Some are only served by buses and trams.
While Rome is a very walkable city, the metro is very useful if you’re tight on time or coming from the airport/train station. It’s also typically faster than taking the tram.

Centro Storico is the historic center of Rome, and it’s an area that encompasses the Pantheon, Piazza Navona, and the famous Trevi Fountain. This is the best neighborhood to stay in Rome for those who want to walk to all the main attractions in the city.

🚶🏻♀️ As central as it gets: Centro Storico is the best neighborhood location-wise; it is literally surrounded by all the main attractions in Rome. Many of them are just 1 to 10 minutes away on foot. Even the Vatican and the Colosseum are only a scenic 20-minute stroll away.

🚇 Great for a quick stay: Esquilino is home to Termini, the most well-connected station in Rome. There, you’ll find both Metro lines A and B as well as trains going to the airport and other parts of Italy. In Rome for just one quick night? Stay here for an easy departure.
🥮 Unique multicultural vibe: At Esquilino, you can experience the multi-ethnic side of Rome. At Piazza Vittorio, you’ll find the Chinese-Italian community with their shops and restaurants. There are also many African restaurants in the area, as well as traditional trattorias.
🚶🏻♀️ Not too far from attractions: From Esquilino, it takes about 20-40 mins to get to the main attractions in Rome on foot. Taking the bus/metro from Termini would take roughly 20 mins. The Vatican isn’t within walking distance but it’s a 30-min direct bus/metro ride from Termini.
